Connecting a drone to Air Control

Stuck on the Connect Aircraft screen? Start here.

Connecting your drone to Air Control is the easiest, most seamless way to log your flights.

Quick notes:

  • Air Control supports most of the DJI product line, except those flown in the DJI Fly and Pilot 2 apps. For those and any other drone, please refer to the Manual Flight Log approach.

  • Connecting your drone to Air Control is not required for LAANC authorization.

  • The DJI Fly Safe system is entirely handled by their apps and website if you find yourself in a position where you received LAANC but the drone won't take off.

The setup is the same as if you were flying in DJI. However, instead of launching the DJI app you'll launch Air Control. In Air Control, after checking your flight conditions, a pilot will tap Fly or create a Mission. The pilot will then be prompted to complete their preflight steps. Once you're Ready to Fly, you'll be presented with the Connect Aircraft screen.

At this point, the mobile device should be connected to the remote controller. Power the remote controller on, then power up the drone. Once connected, you should start to see the camera feed coming through and hear the infamous "home point has been recorded" message.

We take advantage of the manual joystick launch in Air Control. In order to take off, pinch both the sticks down and in, or down and out, and hold. The motors will start and the props will spin. Push up on the left joystick to take off, push down to decrease altitude and land. (Pinching the sticks is also the emergency procedure if the drone crashes or lands and the props are still spinning.) Once the drone lands, a flight has been recorded.

This is also a setting in DJI that can be adjusted if it's not working for you, and can be found under Flight Controller settings > Stop Motor Method > Push Sticks to Inner/Outer Corners (always).

The flight has not yet made it to your account though. Make sure to tap the red Exit button, complete any post-flight steps, and then tap Done to finish logging and being the sync process. Once the sync spinner disappears, you can view your activity from the web dashboard.
